“The Shack”: A Book That Messes With Your Mind!

Friday, June 13th, 2008 | by Ken Talbott

June 11th was my 64th birthday. As Robin had to perform her floral design wonders at QFC (Quality Floral Centers), I decided what was the very best thing for me to do after a year of non-stop broadcasting, phone calls and meetings: I turned off all my phones, got in my car, drove out into the woods, and sat there all day reading a book given to me by a Walk Show listener. It was called “The Shack,” by William P. Young (Windblown Media). Let me warn you, this book messes with your mind when it comes to our image of human suffering, of God, of the church and of ourselves! Yet, my conclusion was that my mind needed messing with! How about yours? You can order your copy of “The Shack” here.

“Not Two Powers–Only One!”

Sunday, June 1st, 2008 | by Ken Talbott

“Now in this world full of evil and problems, we will always, as humans, start by ’seeing things as they are’–as they appear to be–and that means seeing and believing in something that disturbs us, which we call evil, and so it may be. This is ‘negative’ believing . . . and what we are inwardly seeing, and therefore believing, is what we outwardly transmit to others. We can’t help it in our looks, words and deeds, for all we share with others is ourselves; and if we see things as evil we transmit negative believing to others–we transmit darkness, not light; death, not life.
“Is there an alternative? Yes, there is–and that was what settled into me, once I saw God as all: that there cannot be two powers, for He is one, absolute and supreme. But how, then, can I include the workings of an evil power, of which the world and people are so full, as an expression of one power which is God, who is love?” –Norman Grubb, Yes, I Am

My Favorite “Sleeper” Book on Hearing God’s Voice

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 | by Ken Talbott

In the middle of my keynote speech to the Mt. Hermon Christian Writer’s Conference in Santa Cruz, California, I quoted from one of my favorite books, Rees Howells Intercessor–a book written by my “spiritual grandpa,” Norman Grubb. The book is about a Welsh coal miner whose prayers quite evidently changed the course of the world–starting with prayers about how he spent every penny in his possession to his being given millions to steward. He prayed in provisions as diverse as life-saving stipends for the starving widows of India to his praying in every false move that historians say Hitler made that cost him World War II.

When mentioning in my speech that Rees Howells’ claimed he could hear the Lord’s voice just like his own mother’s voice, I was suddenly interrupted by Winnie Wirt, the wife of Sherwood Wirt, Editor Emeritus of Billy Graham’s “Decision Magazine”: “Ken, that book, Rees Howells Intercessor, has had a greater influence on my husband’s life than any other book except the Bible!”

Using the interruption as the occasion to poll the audience, we were all amazed to find out that Rees Howells Intercessor was the single greatest book (also excluding the Bible) in the lives of those hundreds of publishers, editors and authors! Yet, you seldom hear about it, as to my knowledge, it has received very little or no publicity. So, I called the publisher of the book and asked them how many copies of Rees Howells Intercessor they had sold. They said, “Twelve million copies!” Once people read it, they buy Rees Howells Intercessor by the case to give out to friends! Rees Howells Intercessor is truly a “sleeper book”–by its content and by its very means of distribution illustrating how the kingdom of God really works. And it’s cheap!
