Do We Have the Eyes to See?
I asked what I believed to be a penetrating question of Richard Wurmbrand, a Romanian pastor who wrote the book, “Tortured for Christ” and who founded “Voice of the Martyrs,” a non-profit organization with a vision for aiding Christians around the world who are being persecuted for their faith in Christ. I said, “How can the church in America prepare for persecution?” Wurmbrand responded with: “The suffering I experienced at the hands of the Communists–for fourteen years in Romanian prisons and three in solitary confinement, including broken bones and one-inch-deep holes burned by pokers in my back–is nothing to be compared to the suffering you American Christians would be experiencing if you had the eyes to see what was going on in your own mass media, your own education system, your other social institutions and your church. But, you don’t have the eyes to see.”
